Blurb:

Cora Evans will do anything to save her father. Jerry Evans has been accused of embezzling a million dollars from his employer, who plans to hold both Jerry and Cora hostage until the money is returned. Cora’s only hope to save their lives, and find out what really happened to the money, rests in trusting the employer’s son, Nick Halloway.

But, who is Nick really trying to help? Is he just using her emotions against her to help his father? Are all Nick’s efforts to keep her safe just a ploy?

When Cora becomes a suspect in her father’s shooting she is forced to go on the run. It is then she realizes she has no choice but to trust Nick. She’s thrust into a world of criminals and blackmail, with no guarantees that she and her father will walk away innocent.

Excerpt:

Seeing Alexander that close to Cora made Nick’s skin crawl. He didn’t waste any pleasantries on the man. “Did Jerry find the money so soon?” Alexander snorted. “Hardly.”

“So, what’s the news?”

“He still claims someone else stole it, he’s investigating. My guess is he’ll get himself killed.”

Nick kept a straight face and resisted the urge to punch the cabin wall next to him, when he really wanted to hit Alexander in that straight, pointed nose of his.

“Did I ruin your plans by showing up?” Alexander’s mouth twisted. “Don’t bother pretending you’re not trying to get her in bed.”

Nick’s blood boiled hotter at Alexander’s crude words.

“I’m just doing what my father needs me to.” Nick forced his tensed shoulders to relax and folded his arms across his chest, hoping to avoid further conflict with a less defensive stance. “Keith wants her up here for a while, so this is where we’re staying.”

“I don’t buy it, and I don’t know why Keith does.” Alexander wanted a fight, Nick thought, and a reason to grab Cora and take off with her.

Nick shrugged, deciding it best not to goad Alexander.

“Keith doesn’t need a lawyer around,” Alexander said. “You know that, don’t you? You walked away and you’re not getting back in.”

“Don’t be so sure. Maybe a lawyer in the family could do some good.”

Alexander was so stunned, he took a step backwards. Nick mentally kicked himself for giving Alexander another reason to keep a close watch on them.

“What do you want with her? Why did you really get her involved?” The other man laughed, “You know it was the only way to get Jerry to find the money without going to the police. We can’t let information like this get out to the press.”
